An Opportunity Disguised as a Meltdown
I came across this report which I think might be interesting to many people in the building industry, particularly architects. It seeks to answer the question of how to innovate for better buildings. Nth Power and the Fraunhofer Institute have put it together because they believe the new construction sector in the US offers a timely opportunity to innovate. They assert that the market downturn is a favorable dynamic for the adoption of innovation.
Because the inefficient, compartmentalized construction processes so common in the US building industry (and many other countries) has consistently produced energy wasting and low quality buildings, the industry has essentially set itself up for disruption.
Now several drivers are converging to force the industry to deliver cheaper, greener, and better performing buildings. This is transforming the industry to more collaborative, efficient, and economical processes which are better suited to adopt innovation. The authors view this as a Perfect Storm which is nothing short of a revolutionary for the building industry.
